bisnisrakyat.id- One of the holticultural plants used by the Indonesian community is the shallots. The most common use in daily life, shallots are used as seasonings for cooking. Shallots have the potential for raw ingredients in traditional medicines because of their chemical properties. Shallots are able to treat various diseases such as dizziness (vertigo), boils, coughs, dysentery, constipation, insomnia and colds. In general, shallots contain chemical and an active compound that have a preventative function when consumed as a cooking spice and a curative function when used as herbal medicine. Some of the chemicals extracted from shallots are quersetin, flavonoid, saponin, tannin, glycoside, polyphenols and alkaloids, and the active compound used in sulfur compounds.

Sulfur compounds in shallots that have a pharmacological effect on health include alliin, allisin, adenosine, diallyl-disulfide, diallyl-trisulfide, prostaglandin A-1, diallyl-sulfide, phloroglucinol, kaempferol, cycloaliin, and diphenyl-amine. Medical therapy with shallots, which have long been used in Indonesia and in some other countries are aimed at preventing or treating various diseases such as: hemorrhoids, asthma, coughs, boils, worms, fever, diabetes mellitus, dysentery, hypertension, scalp infections, warts ( papilloma), fleas, bloating, ulcers, corns (clavus), urination disorders, nosebleeds, flatulence, rheumatism, stomach ache (heartburn), canker sores, colds, constipation, insect stings, headaches, prostate disorders, diphtheria, parotitis (mumps), chronic bronchitis, inflammation of the tonsils, heart disorder, high LDL cholesterol, atherosclerosis, tuberculosis, digestive disorders, obesity, eczema, bruises, ear inflammation, cancer, impotence, weak immune system.

The nutritional content of shallots can complement the nutrition of the main food menu. There are two nutritional contents in shallots which are quite high, namely mineral and potassium content. Potassium plays an important role in metabolic processes. Minerals also play an important role in maintaining balanced blood pressure, preventing hardening of the arteries and cleaning blood vessels from bad cholesterol deposits, as well as helping regulate skeletal and smooth muscle contractions, and play an important role in the functioning of the nerves and brain. The minerals, calcium and phosphorus contained in shallots are important for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. Apart from having quite complete nutritional content, shallots are also rich in active chemical compounds (sulfur compounds). These compounds play a role in the formation of aroma and provide positive pharmacological effects for health.
